Friday, 18 October 2019. Issue #183.
In this issue: Recurring themes on what can actually be worse than chronic pain itself: 1) Loss of friendships 2) Ignorance or lack of understanding from friends, family and society. 3) Isolation and loss of a social life. 4) Loss of independence and career. 5) Unpredictability. Being trapped within four walls with chronic illness can feel like groundhog day. Retreating to rest, and surrounding yourself with supportive resources in order to regenerate your health. Changing personal perspectives on mobility aids, by customising it into a beautiful extension of your own identity instead. Others may be impressed by our ability to persevere despite everything chronic illness throws at us, but there is simply no other alternative. Discover your actual association with certain words, and reframe them into something helpful instead. It’s a relief when your partner allows you to display the level of pain you are actually in, when stigma surrounding mental and invisible illnesses runs high within society. Watch this three-part documentary-style film called ‘I am Invisible No More’, produced and acted by people from within the chronic illness community themselves. The emotional toll and impact on the quality of life is heavy when doctors misdiagnose autoimmune disorders and chronic illnesses. You can be a hero for those with chronic disabilities in public by advocating and speaking up for them.
