Saying Farewell to 2019 with a Bang!

It’s that time of the year again where everything is jolly and merry (or supposed to be)! There are, however, many people out there who aren’t able to fully immerse themselves into the festive spirit, whatever the reason may be. The holidays can be a stressful time if you’re suffering financially, mentally, emotionally or physically. Or maybe you’re just struggling to cope with adulting, or parenting in general. Life is hard, so I hope that we can all remember to be a little (or a lot) kinder to everyone around us!

With that said, we have a few generous sponsors for this year’s grand giveaway on A Chronic Voice! These are fantastic products for people with chronic or mental illness. They can make life a little easier, and aid in mental or emotional wellness. All these products are suitable and would make great gifts for healthy people, too! Have a browse, join in a giveaway or two, and share your thoughts in the comments below!

*Note: Whilst we’ll try to dispatch items as soon as we possibly can, these products might take up to five weeks to ship, especially if they’re customised and if you’re living overseas. You might receive them after Christmas, but a good gift is worth waiting for, we’d say! Shipping costs will be covered by each sponsor. You may enter in as many giveaways as you like, but can only win one item. Terms & Conditions (T&Cs) differ for each sponsor, and they reserve the right to swap prizes of equivalent value for whatever reason. There will be a summarised version for every sponsor here, but please click on each widget for the full Terms & Conditions.

1. Slick Chicks: Accessible Underwear

Wearing underwear made easy for people with disabilities or chronic pain. Slick Chicks currently offers four different cuts of underwear: brief, high waist brief, hipster and tanga. The biggest difference from regular underwear, is that Slick Chicks’ fasten on and off at the sides. This makes it easier for chicks who can’t stand or bend to change their underwear by themselves. This gives them a little more independence. This review by a young lady with EDS is thorough. She explains her difficulties with standing, and shows you how it works.

These underwear are also made with moisture wicking technology for those accident-prone days, and comes with an anti-microbial finish. The 100% cotton lining provides breathability and comfort, whilst the nylon and spandex fabric makes it stretchable so that you can move around with ease. I will be receiving a pair to try out as well, and will follow up in a separate review. For now, join in the giveaway to receive one for yourself!

2. Thrive Tape: Far Infrared Kinesiology Tape

If you’re familiar or have used any kind of kinesiology tape before, then you’re probably going to love this product! There are more than 50 brands of kinesiology tape out there, but what makes Thrive Tape stand out is their far infrared for targetted pain relief.

Far infrared light is not visible to the naked eye, but is able to penetrate up to 4cm beneath the skin to aid in recovery, and produces a gentle warmth. Thrive Tape is also hypoallergenic, latex-free, sweat resistant and waterproof. You can wear it for up to seven day whilst doing any activity, before changing to a new strip. It supports muscles and joints whilst allowing for free range of motion.

Some chronic pain symptoms you can use Thrive Tape for are: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Lower Back Pain, Plantar Fasciitis, Neck Strain, and any kind of ache or sprain.

They are also a big supporter of the Ehlers-Danlos Society, and a percentage of their sales helps to support their research. Thrive Tape comes in black, beige and zebra pattern (people with EDS will get this!). How cool is that?

They have kindly sent me a few rolls so I can try them out for myself, and I’ll write my thoughts in a separate review. Watching their ‘How to Use’ videos got me really excited; I didn’t know I could use Thrive Tape for TMJ pain, too (my mouthguard isn’t protective enough!). I’ll also be trying their techniques for neck and lower back pains, in a bid to fix my bad posture:

3. Winnie’s Picks: Paint by Numbers for Adults

If you’re a fan of colouring for stress relief, then paint by numbers might be your thing. It takes less effort to paint than it does to colour with pencils, so it might be more relaxing for those with chronic pain, especially in the fingers. Reap the benefits of this therapeutic art activity, and ask your loved ones to join in the fun, too! Here’s a great review on ‘Brainless Blogger’ sharing her full experience.

The winner may pick any design from their catalog, including custom canvases. They have a wide variety of things you could paint, from nature to landscapes to cities, and so much more! They also have some great tutorials if you’re new, or want to get the most out of your experience. Here are some of our favourites:

4. YuYu Bottle

I got a chance to try the YuYu Bottle last year, and wrote an entire review here. If you rely on heat to relieve your aches and pains, then this is the perfect product to add to your pain relief toolkit! I still use my YuYu Bottle up to this day and love it, so I decided to reach out to them to see if they would like to be a sponsor, too. I was so excited when they said ‘yes’, and so spontaneously, too!

It was a delight to discover that they had a whole new collection, the ‘White Label’, specially designed for those with chronic illnesses. What makes the YuYu Bottle special is its length, and these Body Bottles are also wider (15cm/5.9”)! This gives you even more coverage, especially around the stomach and back area. More heat equals more bliss 🙂 There is one in each pattern up for grabs – Leopard, Grey Polka Dot, and Grey:

5. Book: ‘The Chronic Pain Manual: The really, real manual to pain’ by Nikki Albert

Nikki Albert is one of the most prolific chronic illness bloggers out there, and also one of my favourites! I love her sense of humour, her candidness, and for always hitting the nail on the head with her expressions. This is despite working full-time, with monstrous migraines, fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, vertigo, and a whole lot more to contend with. As a fellow chronic illness person, I really don’t know how she does it, and even managed to publish a book! ‘The Chronic Pain Manual’ sounds like a fun book; I quote from a five-star review:

“I have never laughed until I cried about my chronic illness. The dark humor and sarcasm shows how ridiculous it is to be in so much pain ALL the time. It’s also validating and poking fun at the non-pain-people’s responses. This book is not for a specific condition but for all of us who suffer every day with chronic illness. Nikki Albert, you hit the nail on the head! Wait, did I just reference a migraine?”

‘The Chronic Pain Manual’ Giveaway (click on widget for full T&Cs):

  • Number of Prizes: 5.
  • Number of Winners: 5.
  • Formats: Paperback (Book is best viewed in this format).
  • Location: USA & Canada only.

6. Book: Chronic Christmas: Surviving the Holidays with a Chronic Illness by Lene Andersen

‘Chronic Christmas’ is a book all about self-care, both for those with chronic illnesses and their loved ones. The book is chock full of great suggestions in the form of an Advent calendar, although the tips can really be kept in mind year round! Lene Andersen is also the other of a few other books, and of an interesting range we must say! There is ‘Your Life with Rheumatoid Arthritis’, which is a guide with plenty of tools for living well with RA. Then there is ‘The Ultimate Makeup Journal’, to help trigger your imagination and inspire your creativity.

‘Chronic Christmas’ Giveaway (click on widget for full T&Cs):

  • Number of Prizes: 1 physical book signed by author. 2 .mobi formats.
  • Number of Winners: 3. (Please indicate if physical or .mobi format preferred.)
  • Location: Worldwide.

7. Book: ‘Get Back Into Whack’ by Sue Ingebretson

On top of many other things, Sue Ingebretson is an author, speaker, certified holistic health practitioner, and director of programme development for the Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Center at California State University, Fullerton. She has three books published on Amazon: Chronic Coloring, the #1 chronic illness bestseller, FibroWHYalgia, and her latest book, Get Back into Whack. I quote from a top Amazon review:

“‘Get Back into Whack’ is an examination of stress and its negative impact on our body’s ability to heal and repair. She illustrates her points using personal as well as client case studies, in order to give you real life experiences. Discover how to get your brain out of that negative rut, and work your way back towards wellness in this book…..” – Julie, Vine Voice

8. Book: Take Daily as Needed by Kathryn Trueblood

Kathryn is such a lovely person to work with; I recently wrote a short review of her book here, and decided to approach her for this giveaway, too. ‘Take Daily as Needed’ is a whirlwind of a novel where the characters deal with chronic and mental health issues. It is also a stark reflection of life’s realities for many people out there. You can also check out this interview podcast on ‘Invisible Not Broken’ and another Q&A about her book, where Kathryn shares more about her motivations and inspiration for her book. I also quote from one of many reviews:

“The solid latest from Trueblood (The Baby Lottery) is a novel in nonlinear stories told from the perspective of Maeve, a mother of two and paralegal in Washington State dealing with Crohn’s disease. Throughout, Trueblood confidently sculpts her protagonist….Readers will appreciate the character wrinkles each new story turns up.” – Publishers Weekly

‘Take Daily as Needed’ Giveaway (click on widget for full T&Cs):

  • Number of Prizes: 2 (signed by author, if physical format is selected).
  • Number of Winners: 2.
  • Formats: Kindle & Paperback.
  • Location: USA only.

  • That Underwear is LIFE changing! It was one thing my Mum really struggled with in her final year and she hated the indignity of either not wearing any of having to be helped in to it. This would have given her some much needed independence.
