Friday, 01 August 2020. Issue #224.
In this issue: Disability comes in all shapes and sizes, contrary to the beliefs in modern society that disability comes with a wheelchair. Taking ‘today is a bad’ day and looking at it as ‘today is a good day to…..’. ‘Today is a bad day’ is often a thought that we accept as truth in our minds subconsciously, without even questioning it. I’ve visited many A&E hospital departments in Singapore, but dread SGH’s the most due to the inhumane treatment. Delayed pain can be confusing to healthy people, as it can strike hours later, or even the next day. Diet, exercise and sleep are held as the golden trifecta of good health, but stress is heavily undermined. Studies have shown that people actually undermine their chronic pain, so instead of being lazy they are actually working twice as hard just to survive. Needing medication or a biologic drug is not a failure, neither is it giving up or taking the easy way out. Self-acceptance doesn’t mean that you have overcome your illness, but that you are working with it, and rebuilding your identity and self-worth in a way that works for your over all wellbeing. When you’re the only one wearing a mask in London as a disabled person, and feel totally unsafe.
