March 2023 Writing Prompts for People with Chronic Illness & Disabilities

March 2023 Writing Prompts for People with Chronic Illness & Disabilities

I skipped last month’s linkup as I was overloaded with school, medical appointments, chronic pain and the full works! Since it’s recess week, I thought I’d squeeze in and kick off the March 2023 writing prompts early.

How has everyone been, with chronic illness and/or disabilities in the mix? As always, I’d love to hear from each and every one of you – regulars and new faces are all welcome! We’re in this together, and I hope that this chronic illness writing support group helps you to let off some steam, make new friends, feel connected and find some peace, love and joy 💕

How to Participate in the March 2023 Writing Prompts

  • There are 5 writing prompts every month. You just need to pick 3 to write about (although 5 is best!).
  • Publish the post to your own blog, or use a free writing platform like Medium if you don’t have one.
  • Only one link submission per person to avoid spam.
  • Don’t forget to click on the blue ‘Add Link’ button at the bottom to add your post to this page, so that others can read, share and comment on your post.
  • Do comment on at least two other blog posts in this linkup if you participate. Helping to spread the word on your social media is always appreciated as well.
  • Failure to follow these rules might get you blacklisted from future linkups. Let’s keep it fair for all 🙂

  1. Dealing

What have you been dealing with so far in 2023, or recently? Anything major or minor? It could be dealing with gaslighting, difficult diagnoses, pesky insurance, mental health issues, a partner, or even with your own fears, thoughts or worries.

Or perhaps you’d like to take this prompt a bit more figuratively, and talk about how life has been dealing you unfathomable cards, or something else.

You may even be dealing with something really well, and are proud of yourself for doing so. This linkup is as open-ended and flexible as they come!

  2. Thinking

What’s been on your mind of late, or maybe for a long time now? You might be weighing your options, trying to see the pros and cons before making a decision. You could be thinking about a person, project, problem/solution, or even what to cook or get as a gift for a friend.

Or perhaps you’ve been on a more philosophical bent, and have been musing unanswerable questions, or trying to figure out how to do life with chronic illness and disabilities.

Or perhaps, you’re trying to shut your brain up and not think at all. After all, our brains process about 70,000 thoughts a day!

  3. Reacting

How have you been reacting to stuff that’s been on your mind, a situation, or just life in general? As they say, our reactions are one thing that we can more or less control, even when life is chaotic. Though of course, it’s never easy, is it?!

Have you been overreacting of late, and if so, what are the possible triggers? Or perhaps depression has drained you of all feelings, and you aren’t motivated to even react to anything at all.

  4. Experiencing

Have you been experiencing more (or hopefully less!) chronic pain of late? Perhaps you’ve had some traumatic run-ins with healthcare professionals, or are experiencing some turmoil in your life.

Of course, I hope that you’re actually experiencing some pleasant sensations and things in life. Perhaps you’re trying to be more mindful, and soak up each moment as they come and go.

This writing prompt could also be related to gaining experience at school or at work. Or even experiencing déja-vu, a full spectrum of emotions, culture shock, and so much more.

You may also want to take the opportunity to share more about your health or life experiences, and what you’ve gained or learned through it all.

  5. Viewing

I wanted to use the word ‘perspective’ actually, but it seems like there isn’t a verb for it. So in a similar vein, I thought I’d use the word ‘viewing’. Often, a simple change in perspective can turn our day or mood around. Our thoughts and perspective are that powerful.

You could also be house viewing, browsing stuff online to buy, taking in the sights and sounds of nature, watching a film (please recommend some good ones!), or looking at something else.

I hope that the March 2023 writing prompts for the chronically ill and disabled have given you some food for thought. Hopefully it makes you excited to come join us, share, support and be supported. Looking forward to reading what you have to write about!

  • Great prompts this month, Sheryl. I used this month’s prompts to help with an disability accessibility issue here in Taiwan. It’s a long post as I’ve written it for the government and the non profit I’m working with to shed light on this issue. If folks don’t read the whole thing, perhaps they could just leave a comment about a few daily things they face with disability. Thank you, as always, for the opportunity. I hope you’re not wasting one minute of time thinking about missing February. I also like the idea of bi monthly meet-ups and support whatever you decide!

    • Thanks, Carrie! Yes that is such an excellent idea – what you did! It’s so important for societies in general, too. Yes the prompts are a little heavy hitting this month 😉 Seems like I may not have the time to participate as usual, though 🙁 Sending good thoughts and I’ll try to follow up on the other participants too.

      • It was effective and I thank everyone here for their comments. We’re heading to parliament next week. No idea how that’s going to go as I’ve been to Parliament during my Chamber years and those buildings are not accessible. EEKS. Guess ‘my pusher’ is going to find out the hard way.

  • Thanks Sheryl – yay it’s fantastic to have the prompts back – just submitted mine and looking forward to reading everyone else’s posts too 🙂

    • Thanks for always being so responsive, Sarah! I really enjoy reading your posts and thank you for participating 🙂

  • Good to see you back Sheryl. I will look forward to catching up with everyone. Thanks for hosting x

    • Thank you, Anne! And also for being so so supportive of the linkups. You are probably the #1 participant and deserve a medal! 😉
